Travel Marquette Introduces BARK Ranger Program to Support Responsible Pet Recreation and Stewardship

MARQUETTE, Mich., May 15, 2025 Travel Marquette is proud to introduce the BARK Ranger Program, a new addition to the Respect Marquette County initiative designed to help dog owners enjoy Marquette County, Michigan's natural spaces responsibly. The program educates locals and visitors alike on best practices for exploring the outdoors with pets while encouraging a deeper connection with the region's trails, wildlife and community.

Adapted from the National Park Service's BARK Ranger initiative launched in 2015, Marquette's version reflects the area's deep-rooted outdoor culture and dog-friendly spirit. With miles of scenic trails, pet-welcoming businesses and an engaged outdoor community, Marquette County is a beloved destination for dog lovers. The BARK Ranger Program offers a fun way to reinforce responsible recreation and care for shared spaces.

With the popularity of pet travel on the rise, the BARK Ranger Program encourages dog owners to take simple responsible actions – like leashing their pets and cleaning up waste – that help protect Marquette County's outdoor spaces. The program reflects the broader values of the Respect Marquette Campaign, which inspires both residents and visitors to show respect for the outdoors, the community and others through actionable and easy steps.

Similarly, the BARK acronym highlights four easy ways to practice good trail etiquette with dogs:

  • Bag Your Pet's Waste: Dog waste may seem harmless, but it can introduce harmful bacteria and parasites into the soil and water. Always bag it, pack it out and dispose of it properly.
  • Always Leash Your Pet: Keep dogs on a leash to avoid unexpected encounters with people, other dogs or wildlife, especially on multi-use trails where bikes and runners may be moving quickly.
  • Respect Wildlife: Keep your dog close and on trail to avoid disrupting nesting birds, young animals or sensitive habitats.
  • Know Before You Go: While Marquette is widely dog-friendly, there are a few areas such as Presque Isle Park, city beaches and many groomed cross-country ski trails where dogs are not permitted. Plan ahead to find dog-approved trails and spaces.

From the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and Harlow Lake to Thomas Rock, Marquette County is filled with on-leash hiking and adventure options for visitors traveling with dogs. Many local businesses also welcome pets with open arms on patios, trails and even in shops.

"Marquette County is a place where people come to connect with nature, and that includes our four-legged companions," shares Susan Estler, CEO of Travel Marquette. "The BARK Ranger Program helps ensure that dogs and their owners can explore responsibly while helping preserve the beauty and safety of our trails, waterways and wildlife."

To recognize and reward responsible pet ownership, Travel Marquette is offering free Travel Marquette dog bandanas to new BARK Rangers who sign the pledge. These bandanas, along with dog waste bags, will be distributed to select dog-friendly hotels in the area by the end of May. Guests staying at participating hotels can pick up their bandanas at the front desk, or they can visit the Travel Marquette office at 201 S. Front Street, open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m

Educational materials including digital resources, trail signage and social media content will help spread awareness and promote participation.
